Abstract BS EN ISO/IEC 9646-2:1996 is a standard that specifies the communication between open systems in the interconnection of information technology equipment using the Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection (ISO/IEC 7498-1) and the protocols specified in ISO/IEC 9646-1. ISO/IEC 9646-2:1996 is a part of the ISO/IEC 9646 series, which deals with the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Basic Reference Model and its protocol stacks. The OSI model is a conceptual framework that standardizes the functions of a telecommunication or computing system into seven distinct layers, each responsible for a specific set of communication tasks. The ISO/IEC 9646-2:1996 standard specifically focuses on the Application Layer of the OSI model, defining the services, protocols, and procedures for communication between application entities in open systems. It plays a crucial role in enabling interoperability between different systems in a networked environment.
