Abstract BS EN ISO/IEC 7811-4:1996 is a standard that specifies the requirements for the location and spacing of tracks on ID-1 cards, which include financial transaction cards (e.g., credit cards and debit cards). This standard is part of the ISO/IEC 7811 series, which covers various aspects of identification cards with magnetic stripe technology. More specifically, BS EN ISO/IEC 7811-4:1996 deals with the magnetic stripe tracks on ID-1 cards, which are cards of the size defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as 85.60 mm × 53.98 mm (3.370 in × 2.125 in), commonly known as credit card size. The standard specifies the following details for each track on the magnetic stripe: The data bit density (i.e., the number of bits per inch or millimeter). The track width. The track location, measured from the edges of the card. The coercivity of the magnetic material used (either high coercivity or low coercivity). The data encoding scheme, which defines how the data is represented on the magnetic stripe. By following the requirements of this standard, card manufacturers, issuers, and other relevant parties ensure that the magnetic stripe data on ID-1 cards is accurately positioned, encoded, and can be reliably read by card readers and processing systems.
