Recovery of sulfur compound from spent activated carbon

Recovery of sulfur compound from spent activated carbon / Muhammad Rasyad Alawidin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The recovery of sulfur compound from activated carbon exhausted with hydrogen sulfide using different chemicals has been investigated. The chemicals that has been studied are hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and diethanolamine (DEA). The best from the chemicals used has been chosen to further investigate the effect of concentration, time and temperature towards the amount of sulfur recovery. Optimization study was done with the selected chemical. From the result, only H2O2 is able to recover the sulfur compound from the treatment while the usage of NaOH and DEA failed to recover any of its product thus H2O2 was selected to further studied. The optimal sulfur recovery conditions were determined as 40 v/v % of H2O2, oxidation time of 24 hours at 70 0C. Under these condition, the sulfur recovery was 49.62 wt% of sulfur. Analysis of the experimental results shows that the sulfur recovery is affected by concentration due to the amount of oxidant molecules present, effected by the oxidation time with the H2O2 due to the amount of interaction by the molecules and affected by temperature due to the external heat available.
