Reconditioning, modification, and propulsion systems requirement investigation of USM e-UAV / Muhammad Adib Izzuddin Ahmad Zahrol
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This project is about reconditioning, modification, and propulsion systems requirement investigation of the USM e-UAV. This project comprises three phases which are reconditioning phase, modification phase, and propulsion systems requirement investigation phase. The main idea of this project is to rectify the propulsion systems problem faced during the first takeoff session in 2012. Hence, the UAV can still be used for other applications rather than be thrown away. Several aerospace knowledge are being implemented theoretically and technically in this project. An inspection is made to find any structural and physical damage done to the UAV’s parts. Several major parts such as the control systems, right aileron, and main landing gear needs to be recondition as their condition is not airworthy. In the modification phase, the wing root section is modified by placing two aluminium plates on top and below the section to strengthen and stiffen it. This is due to the spar configuration where the spars from left and right wing does not meet at the wing root. The highest loads and moment distribution along the spanwise are acting on the wing root section. The overall drag and take-off speed needed to fly the USM e-UAV are calculated. By using this information, the power required to propel the UAV can be estimated. For justification, the UAV will be pulled by a motorcycle until it reaches the estimated takeoff velocity and the outcome is observed. This project involved widely on technical methods in designing an aircraft. The assumptions made in this project are taken from several aircraft design books.
