Characterization of asphalt with different warm mix additives

Characterization of asphalt with different warm mix additives / Tew Chin Wei
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Warm Mix Asphalt is the asphalt binder with additive which is able to be manufactured and paved at a significantly lower temperature than Hot Mix Asphalt. This research study the effect of 1%, 2% and 3% of commercialized additive, Rediset and non-commercialized additives e.g. wax, zeolite, residue from pyrolysis of biomass for activated carbon on the properties of AC 80/100 and SBS asphalt binder respectively. The resulted warm mix asphalts went through a series of tests: viscosity tests, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), asphaltenes content analysis and Dynamics Shear Rheological (DSR) test. Viscosity test was carried out within temperature range of 120-160oC and 140-180oC for AC 80/100 and SBS asphalt binder respectively. Molecular weight and molecular size distribution of asphalt binder was analysed in GPC test. Asphaltenes content analysis was carried out by dissolving asphalt binder in n-pentane. Frequency sweep was carried out by using dynamic shear rheometer to determine the rutting properties of asphalt binder. From the analysis results, generally, it can be concluded that wax was a potential warm mix additive in term of viscosity reduction but had a poor rutting resistance while zeolite and residue from pyrolysis of biomass for activated carbon possess sufficient rutting resistance but lower viscosity reduction. Meanwhile, the commercialised warm mix additive, Rediset is excellent in viscosity reduction as well as rutting resistance.
