Characterization and optimization of the conversion coating process on aluminium surface for corrosion protection / Syafiqah Mad Zin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Conversion coating process is a coating formed on the surface of a metal part due to the reaction of the metal surface with a chemical. A metal part used in this project is aluminium and there are three types of aluminium used which are Al 2024, Al 5052 and Al 6061 for evaluation of the chemical conversion coating. Chemicals that act as an immersed liquid in this experiment are Alodine 1200s and Surtec 650. Based on the understanding of the mechanism of aluminium reaction with all the environments, comprehension of the particular requirement for chromate conversion process development enables the process to be optimized. The possible parameters may include increasing the concentration and immersion time for minimal corrosion protection. This is because this parameters strongly affect the composition of the chromate conversion coating and have a large influence on its corrosion performance. In this project, thickness test, coating mass test and resistivity test were conducted to investigate the role played by the concentration and immersion time of the chromate bath on the properties of chromate film. The analysis of the DE Software shows that the optimum condition for thickness of coating, mass coating and electrical resistance. The conclusion for this project is as for Alodine 1200S solution, the best optimum condition is when we test on Al 5052. As it gives the highest mass (0.0133041g) and thickness of coating (0.0156644 mm) even the electrical resistance is highest (75.7383 Ω) compared to others. Lower electrical resistance are in favour but mass and thickness of coating are the priority in choosing the best optimum condition. As for Surtec 650 solution, the best optimum condition is when we test on Al 5052. As it gives the highest mass (0.0228296 g) and thickness of coating (0.00637133 mm) with the least electrical resistance (22.2249 Ω).
