Integration of regenerative adsorption properties forpaintosorp / T. Parrimalan Thiruchelvan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this study, ‘Paintosorp’, a dye adsorbent coating product developed by Universiti Sains Malaysia will be the structured support to immobilize the photocatalytic active phase of TiO2 as this product contains bentonite as its adsorbent (Azha, 2014). As proposed, integration of the TiO2 into Paintosorp will add oxidation capabilities which will act as an cleaning agent to the adsorbed dye particles in the bentonite thus creating a regenerative property to the adsorption capabilities of the product itself. In order to add a photocatalyst TiO2 to facilitate oxidation of MB, a new functional composition of Paintosorp has to be developed. The composition was studied by fixing the original composition and finding the maximum solid loading of the Paintosorp when TiO2 added. The best composition for maximum solid capacity is 0.3g TiO2 added into Paintosorp composition. Samples were studied for the effect of TiO2 presence on the adsorbing performance of Paintosorp, where it is found that the presence of TiO2 in Paintosorp in dark condition does not affect its adsorbing performance. Samples were also studied for effect of UV irradiation on adsorbing performance of Paintosorp, the UV irradiation with presence of TiO2 in Paintosorp is found to be not affecting its adsorbing performance. Besides, the effect of varying light source studied on the adsorbing performance of Paintosorp where even after exposed to sunlight, the adsorption performance of the Paintosorp is not affected.
