haracterization of natural organic matter in surface water for drinking water treatment

Characterization of natural organic matter in surface water for drinking water treatment / Munirah Pishal
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water is an important constituent of human in daily basis. The demand of clean drinking water increasing by year and the percentage of consumers that needs the drinking water supply also increasing. The natural organic matter (NOM) is an insignificance parameter in water drinking treatment facilities in Malaysia. NOM reacts with disinfectant and produce disinfectant by products (DPBs) which are bad for human health. From the recent research, the DBPs are the factors that cause cancer in the human body. World Health Organization (WHO) gives attention to the issues and them limit the DBPs production in the water supply system. Moreover, the disinfectant demands were increasing because of the reaction between NOM and DPBs. It also gives the adverse effect on the colour and taste of the surface water. In a nutshell, NOM is unfavourable and nuisance to the treatment system. For this study, 3 different samples were taken which are Jalan Baru, Sungai Kerian and Redac Pond. The sample taken three times and the water quality are determined. The water quality is compared with the Malaysian Water Quality Standard. The sample is treated in two conditions which are pH 6 and without pH control. The alum dose that has been applied is from 60mg/L to 300mg/L. After the analysis, the suitable alum dose for Jalan Baru is 60 mg/L under pH 6 conditions. Sungai Kerian and Redac Pond were 120mg/L and 60 mg/L with no pH control. The optimum dose was chosen based on the ability to remove the highest percentage of turbidity, colour and NOM. The final part of this dissertation is the characterization of NOM. The sample is characterized by using full scan wavelength, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific UV absorbance (SUVA).
