Rockfall occurs when a rock detached from a slope. Due to the rapid development in Malaysia, a lot of the rock slopes are exposed to the environment. Inappropriate design of slope cutting can always lead to rockfall. Damages caused by rockfall are not merely on destroying the facilities of the country but also seize lives and people’s properties. In the engineering point of view, understanding the rockfall trajectories is very important before a development near hilly area is being carried out. Therefore, this study had examined the bounce height and runout distance of falling rocks based on different rock sizes, rock shapes and ground surfaces. Laboratory experiment of rocks with different sizes falls from 35°, 45° and 60° slope angles as well as falling vertically on different ground surfaces were carried out in this study to understand the mechanism of the falling rocks. RocFall computer simulation program was used to execute the probable bounce height and runout distance for various cases of rock shapes on different ground surfaces in this study. A number of graphs were plotted to gain a better understanding on bounce height and runout distance of the falling rock. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that steeper slope and harder ground surface lead to high bounce height of falling rocks. Rocks with lighter weight can bounce higher than the heavier rocks. Besides, it is found that irregular rocks with shape closer to sphere tends to bounce higher on first bounce and roll further away from the falling slope. Hence, the influence of rock sizes and shapes, and impact surface material should not be omitted in proposing rockfall protective measures. All the effort in completing this study is to produce a better estimation of safe zone and design a more suitable rockfall protective system for the future development of our country.
