___________________________________________________________________________________ Piezocone penetration tests were carried out at four locations within the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Engineering Campus, Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang. Data from earlier tests were also compiled as the information was accumulated together with those obtained from current project. It was found that there are three main soil layers underneath the campus area which are soft clay, organic material and hard layer. The thickest subsurface soil layer is the soft clay layer. These findings were as expected due to the fact that the area was a former swamp that later developed into a palm oil plantation. The presence of a substantial amount of organic soils was also due to the some reason, that is, the plantation activities that have taken place over a very long period. Hard layer was found only deep below the surface at a depth of at least 12 meter. Any construction would generally require a lot of piling to support the structures. The hard layer consists of two – hard clay layer and sand layer. The data provided by this project provided information that can be conveniently used in planning and development of the area.
