Removal of remazol brilliant violet, 5r from aqueous solution using pinang frond based activated carbon

Removal of remazol brilliant violet, 5r from aqueous solution using pinang frond based activated carbon / Nazzarul Nashriq Zaini Sham
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this study, pinang frond based activated carbon (PFAC) was prepared for the removal of Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R (RBV5R) in an aqueous solution. Impregnation of pinang frond with potassium hydroxide (KOH) followed by activation under carbon dioxide (CO2) flow at 800°C were carried out. The produced PFAC was found to be mesoporous in nature with fixed carbon content of 80.14%, surface area of 855.30 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.405 cm3/g and average pore diameter of 4.75 nm. For batch adsorption study, the RBV5R dyes uptakes by the PFAC were increased with initial dyes concentration and contact time. The adsorption uptakes of RBV5R were found to increase from 22.97 to 188.29 mg/g as the initial dye concentration increase from 25 to 300 mg/L. The percentage RBV5R removal was slightly from 89.16% to 93.12% as the solution temperature increases from 30°C to 60°C. The PFAC-RBV5R system suits to the Langmuir isotherms with monolayer adsorption capacity of 172.414 mg/g. Kinetic study of the adsorption process was done to pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic model respectively. Thermodynamics study was also being carried out and the result shows an endothermic nature of the adsorbent-adsorbate system.
