Removal of turbidity, colour & bod using physical model of river bank filtration_Lye Wei Kee_A9_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ The process of extracting groundwater from wells adjacent to a river in order to induce infiltration from the river has been applied in many countries of the world. Such process is called river bank filtration. This study was carried out in order to access the suitability of process of river bank filtration to be applied at the river bank of Sg. Kerian. Soil samples from the river bank were obtained as the step immediately after the physical model of river bank filtration was fabricated. Sieve analysis and permeability test were carried out in order to identify the properties of soil samples obtained. The chosen site to obtain soil samples could be considered as a site that suitable for installation of river bank filtration. The raw water quality from Sg. Kerian was determined and process of river bank filtration was run by using the fabricated model. Turbidity, colour and BOD were parameters used to access the performance of the model. The performance of the model was accessed by determining removal capacity of the mentioned parameters under influences of flow rate and running time of model respectively. The model was run for 150 minutes with 5 different flow rates which were 50 ml/min, 100 ml/min, 150 ml/min, 200 ml/min and 250 ml/min. For each flow rate, 5 samples were taken and each sample was taken every 30 minutes. The effect of running time of model towards removal capacity of turbidity and colour was not obvious because the removal capacity of both parameters was consistent throughout the running time. An almost horizontal line was drawn for graph that showed relationship of removal capacity with running time for each flow rate used. The effect of flow rate towards removal capacity of turbidity and colour was not clearly shown because there was no trend in graph of removal capacity versus flow rate. However, the removal capacity of BOD was doubtful due to high variation of results obtained.
