Effect of wood waste ash as partial cement replacement on strength characteristics of concrete / Muhammad Firdaus Razali
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The enormous amount of wastes produced during wood processing operations in many countries causes a nuisance both to the health and environment when not properly disposed and provides challenging opportunities for the use of wood waste as a construction material. This study examines the potential use and effect of wood waste ash (WWA) as partial cement replacement on strength characteristic of concrete. Tests on fresh and hardened concrete mixtures produced by partial replacement of cement using WWA were investigated. The property of fresh concrete studied is slump test and the mechanical strength parameters of concrete mixtures covered in the study are concrete density, compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile splitting strength, exposure to elevated temperatures, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). Chemical composition of WWA was evaluated using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analytical method. WWA was used as a partial cement replacement level of 10%, 20%, and 30% by total binder weight. Water to binder ratio was held constant at 0.54 for all concrete mixtures. Results indicated that the workability of fresh concrete decreases as the WWA content as partial cement replacement increases. The compressive, flexural, and the tensile splitting strengths of WWA concrete are generally less than those of the control concrete for the ages investigated and the strength decreases with an increase in WWA content with the lowest values obtained at 30% replacement level of WWA. The replacement of 10% WWA by weight of cement appears to be the optimum amount that can produce structural grade concrete with acceptable strength properties. This study also investigated the behaviour of WWA concrete when exposed to elevated temperatures. For this experiment, the loss in weight, residual compressive strength, the reduction in the UPV and the surface characteristics of the samples were investigated.
