Purification of silicone resin using membrane filtration

Purification of silicone resin using membrane filtration / Arnold Wiryanto
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Silicone purification has become a paramount importance in ensuring the achievement of appropriate properties and sufficient chemical purity in diverse applications. In this industrial collaborative work, polyvinylidenedifluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes are proposed for the microfiltration of water in silicone resin. Major aspects that pose influence on water rejection performance are temperature, moisture concentration, pressure and membrane characteristics. The filtration results showed that adequate water rejection is achieved for PVDF membrane under high temperature at low operating pressure or the opposite case. PTFE membrane allows better performance on water rejection for purifying S250 but further dominated by PVDF membrane for S500 due to higher moisture concentration. The respective membranes were further characterized with contact angle measurements, SEM and FTIR. The characterizations showed that PTFE is dominant over PVDF in terms of membrane hydrophobicity which was represented by the value of 130.29 ± 0.30 and 101.50 ± 0.24°, respectively. A reduction in fouled membrane surface hydrophobicity is also observed. Fractured cross sections and the upper surface of the membranes were observed with SEM which showed a slight and complete fouling phenomenon on PVDF and PTFE membrane. Lastly, determination of membrane chemistry and the associated chemical structure of fresh PVDF and PTFE membranes were conducted as well.
