Pull out behaviour of tyre mat by using Geotextiles as weaving material

Pull out behaviour of tyre mat by using Geotextiles as weaving material / Nor Liyana Ramliy
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rapid developments in Malaysia nowadays increase registered vehicles on the road. Thus, this increases the production of scrap tyres years by years. The generation of scrap tyres cause stockpiling of it at landfill area. Besides consuming large area, it induced mosquito and snake breeding and can lead to fire hazard potential. Although there were many previous research using scrap tyres, most of them only used the treads of the scrap tyres. Meanwhile the sidewalls were left behind unused. In this study, the sidewall tyres were used to produce a tyre mat and layered over sand layer. Then, the geotextiles were used as weaving material to the mat. Tensile test had been done to determine the maximum breaking force for each material. For geotextiles, the maximum breaking force was affected by the thickness of the samples. For sidewall tyres, it shows varies value in the maximum breaking force obtained because of the sizes, thickness and wires inside were different. Direct shear also had been done for all materials separately. For sand, sand + geotextiles and sand + tyres, the value of cohesion obtained was 3.82 kPa, 2.51 kPa and 2.86 kPa respectively. Meanwhile, for friction angle is 46.87°, 44.80° and 46.95° respectively. Three samples of tyre mat consisted of four, five and six sidewall were produce for pull out test. Load required to pull the mat consisted of four sidewall is lower than the mat consisted of five and six sidewall tyres. The effect of fifth and sixth sidewall tyres enhances strength to attach the back and front part of the tyre mat. Geotextiles acts like a stretching material to the mat when the tyre mat was pulled.
