Deployment mechanism of multi-faceted spatial structure based on idea of origami / Leow Chee Sin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This research was conducted to establish an effective method for the deployment of multi-faceted spatial structure from a two dimensional base pattern in replace conventional method using scaffolds. The work scope covered investigation of effects of parameters affecting foldability of small-scaled multi-faceted spatial structure such as thickness of facets, folding angle of facets, gap between facets, installation of fold initiator and lifting method. A circular crease pattern comprises of successive mountain and valley folds, was created by modifying the square Waterbomb tessellation pattern. The structure transformation was demonstrated using paper folding technique and Freeform Origami software as a guidance for physical modeling. Foldability along the fold-line was enhanced by ensuring consistent gap distance and reducing the number of hinges. It was discovered that a ratio of panel gap over panel thickness of 4.667 was most optimum to cater for maximum panel turning angle of 155°. An innovative effort was carried out by modifying metal hinge to become functional fold initiator. This element was installed at every mountain fold to create an initial folding pattern prior to lifting. A total of five lifting trials was performed with the assistance of mechanical crane. The first two means using wooden lifting frame were found to be ineffective to generate the desired pattern formation. After eliminating the wooden lifting frame, the third lifting method, characterized by divergence of ropes from a single point, yielded a satisfactory result. Further improvement was carried out by introducing turnbuckle and pulling mechanism at model edges during the subsequent lifting trials. It can be concluded that an integration of all parameters governing the foldability of multi-faceted spatial structure, plus an effective lifting and pulling mechanism enables the efficient transformation of a multi-faceted spatial structure from two dimensional base pattern.
