Response surface methodology (RSM) had been widely employed in various
experiments to evaluate the effects of factors and determine optimum condition of
parameters for desirable responses. In this research, RSM was applied to optimize
the operating condition for the extraction of the Malaysian propolis. Experiments
were conducted to analyse the impact of various factors such as the extraction
temperature, solvent concentration and solid-to-solvent ratio, on the yield of the
propolis extraction. In the case of the total extraction yield, none of the three factors
gave a significant (p > 0.1) effect. For the study of total phenolic contents, solid-tosolvent
ratio was the only parameter to show a significant (p < 0.05) effect. Solvent
concentration was the only variable which contributed to the significant (p < 0.05)
impact on the total flavones extracted. The overall finding showed that no substantial
interactive effect was observed between the three variables studied. The yield of the
conducted experimentation showed that the antioxidant content of the Malaysian
propolis was comparable to those of the neighbouring countries, Thailand and
Indonesia. In addition, the tropical Malaysian propolis fared well in terms of quantity
during its collection as it is available throughout the year.
