Harmonic current caused negative effects to the power quality either being received or
being used. The reason for the existence of this harmonic current is the excessive usage
of non-linear loads in the power supply system and consequently lowers down the power
factor. In this project, a method has been applied to decrease the 5th and the 7th harmonic
current and improve the power factor in the balanced non-linear load. The method is
applied by designing a band-pass passive filter using passive components such as resistor,
capacitor and inductor. This method must be able to decrease the current harmonics to the
level standardized by IEEE 519-1992, which states that 20% current THD and 5%
voltage THD with each individual harmonic exceeds no more than 3% of the 1st
harmonic. This method must also improve the power factor until it exceeds the stated
value, that is 0.85 or more (PF ≥ 0.85). Analysis and research is done to prove that the
passive filter works or otherwise. Results obtained from the experiment shows that this
method is able to decrease the 5th and 7th harmonic current and improve the power factor.
The 5th and 7th Total Harmonic Current Distortion (THDi) has been decreased as much as
in the range 36.96% to 55.78% for each load’s phase and the power factor is improved to
more than 0.85
