Preparation and characterisation of hydrophobic poly vinylidene fluoride)(pvdf) membrane_Nik Asmidar Nik Awang_K4_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ This study describes the preparation and characterization of hydrophobic poly(vinylidene flouride) membrane by phase inversion method using dual coagulation bath system. There are two solvents that used in this formulation namely dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMAC). The effects of immersion time, polymer concentration, isopropanol/water ratio and solvent types on membrane contact angles were studied. The morphologies and wettability of PVDF membrane were investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and contact angle (CA) measurement. The defined nodular structures of membranes were obtained by immersed into pure of isopropanol bath. To further increase membrane hydrophobicity, membrane prepared using DMF were immersed into the first coagulation bath for 4s followed by water bath for 1 day. By increasing the isopropanol content in the coagulation bath, the contact angle increase significantly for DMF-PVDF solution. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) image show that membrane immersed in pure isopropanol coagulation bath resulted in membrane with smaller and uniform pores.
