Sisa cerucuk kayu bakau digunakan sebagai prekursor lignoselulosa untuk menyediakan karbon teraktif dalam kertas kajian ini. Sisa cerucuk kayu bakau merupakan antara sisa yang biasa didapati di tapak pembinaan tempatan. Selain mengurangkan kuantiti sisa tersebut di tapak pelupusan, nilainya boleh diperoleh semula dengan menjadikan sisa tersebut sabagai karbon teraktif yang mempunyai luas permukaan yang tinggi dan kapasiti penjerapan yang tinggi. Objektif utama kertas penyelidikan ini adalah untuk menyediakan karbon teraktif optimum dengan menggunakan sisa cerucuk kayu bakau sebagai prekursor lignoselulosa melalui pengaktifan bahan kimia NaOH atau KOH dalam suhu pirolisis yang berbezaan. Kesan jenis ejen pengaktifan kimia dan suhu pengaktifan atas hasil karbon teraktif dan kapasiti penjerapan pada metilena biru telah dikaji. Daripada mengunakan cara pengisitepuan, prekursor telah dicampur dengan hidroksida kering sebelum menjalankan pirolisi dalam relau suhu tinggi. Karbon teraktif yang disintesis melalui kaedah pencampuran fizikal memiliki luas permukaan dan prestasi penjerapan setanding dengan karbon teraktif yang telah disintesis melalui kaedah pengisitepuan. Karbon teraktif optimum telah disediakan melalui pengaktifan kimia menggunakan NaOH dengan suhu pengaktifan 700oC. Hasil karbon teraktif ini ada sebanyak 16.78% dan kapasiti penjerapan maksimum pada biru metilena ialah 250mg / g. Luas permukaan BET, luas permukaan Langmuir dan isipadu mikroliang maisng-masing adalah 421.7484m2 / g, 612,1778 m2 / g dan 0.126307cm³ / g. Data uji kaji penjerapan metilena biru oleh semua karbon teraktif yang disediakan telah berpandanan dengan Langmuir isoterma dan mempunyai pekali korelasi, R2 lebih besar daripada 0.99. Nilai R2 untuk prestasi penjerapan karbon teraktif optimum adalah 0,9989. Hasil kajian menunjukkan karbon teraktif yang disediakan daripada kayu bakau menggunakan methodologi pengaktifan kimia oleh hidroksida (sama ada NaOH atau KOH) pada suhu 500 oC, 600oC dan 700oC dengan kaedah pencampuran fizikal adalah sesuai untuk penjerapan metilena biru. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mangrove pile leftovers were used as the lignocellulosic precursors to prepare activated carbon in this research paper. It was a common waste that can be found at local construction site. Besides reducing its quantity to be disposed at landfill, its value can be regained by making it into activated carbon with high surface area and high adsorption capacity. The main objective of this research paper was to prepare the optimum activated carbon using mangrove pile leftovers as lignocellulosic precursors which were chemically activated by hydroxides either NaOH or KOH under different pyrolysis temperature. The effect of types of chemical activating agent and activating temperature on activated carbon yield and adsorption capacity on methylene blue were studied. Instead of impregnation, precursors were mixed with dry hydroxides thoroughly before undergoing high temperature pyrolysis in furnace. It was found that activated carbon synthesized through physical mixing method possessed surface area and adsorption performance comparable to activated carbon that was synthesized through impregnation method. The optimum activated carbon was prepared through chemical activation by NaOH under 700oC. It gave a yield of 16.78% and maximum adsorption capacity on methylene blue of 250mg/g. Its BET surface area, Langmuir surface area and micropore volume were 421.7484m2/g, 612.1778 m2/g and 0.126307cm³/g respectively. Experimental data of methylene blue adsorption for all prepared activated carbon were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm with correlation coefficient, R2 greater than 0.99. R2 value for adsorption performance of the optimum activated carbon was 0.9989. The results showed activated carbon prepared from raw mangrove timber using hydroxides (either NaOH or KOH) under temperature 500 oC, 600oC and 700oC by physical mixing method were suitable for removal of methylene blue.
