BS EN 50168:1996 is a British Standard that specifies the requirements for the design, manufacture, testing, and installation of electrical equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. This standard was published in 1996 and has since been replaced by newer editions.
The standard covers the following types of electrical equipment:
1.Electrical apparatus for use in gas atmospheres
2.Electrical apparatus for use in dust atmospheres
3.Electrical apparatus for use in underground mines
The standard provides guidelines for the classification of hazardous areas and the selection of appropriate electrical equipment for use in these areas. It also outlines the testing and certification procedures required for electrical equipment to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres.
BS EN 50168:1996 is one of several standards that form part of the European Union's ATEX directive (ATEX is an abbreviation of the French phrase "Atmosphères Explosibles"). The ATEX directive is a set of regulations that govern the use of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres in the EU.
