Optimal placement of Distributed Generation (DG) in radial distribution networks is
investigated to minimize the losses and improve the voltage profile. The proposed Particle
Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is used to find the optimal placement for DG. The test
system is used based on IEEE 33 Bus System. Backward Forward Sweep (BFS) is used to
find the load flow for IEEE 33 Bus System. Load flow calculation using BFS method is
used as the base or reference case in IEEE 33 Bus System. Results are compared without
DG as the base case and with the present of optimal placement of DG using the proposed
PSO algorithm. To increase the scope of study, IEEE 33 Bus System is varied with
different load-size conditions which is light, normal and heavy conditions. Light load is 50
% and heavy load is 150% from the normal load. DG used in this research is of two
different types i.e. DG type 1 and DG type 3. DG type 1 is with zero DG reactive power
and unity power factor. While, DG type 3 will inject both real power and reactive power
with power factor of 0.85 lagging. From the results, DG type 1 is optimally located at bus
6, then the percentage of total real power losses are reduced to 40.43%, 44.52% and
48.44% for light, normal and heavy load respectively. The total reactive power losses are
reduced to 38.09%, 42.42%, and 46.16% for light, normal and heavy load respectively. For
the voltage profile improvement when DG type 3 is located at bus 6, the percentage total
real power losses are reduced to 61.69%, 64.30% and 66.74% for light, normal and heavy
load respectively. Total reactive power losses are reduced to 57.34%, 60.26% and 65.27%
for light, normal and heavy load respectively. For voltage profile for both types of DG
shown improvement which are in between 0.92 V p.u to 0.98 V p.u. The effect of DG
penetration on system losses and voltage profile were investigated. Therefore, the proposed
PSO algorithm has been found to be very effective in minimizing the network losses and
improving voltage profile.
