Abatement of odor using commercial products at waste transfer station / Vong Yu Huan
Pencemaran bau berasal daripada kemudahan sisa pepejal perbandaran seperti stesen pemindahan sisa pepejal menyebabkan ketidakselesaan alam sekitar terutama terhadap penduduk yang tinggal berhampiran dengan kemudahan tersebut. Kekurangan standard bau dan garis panduan yang dapat mengurangkan kesan bau dengan berkesan menjadi satu masalah utama yang dihadapi oleh pengusaha kemudahan sisa pepejal perbandaran selepas menerima aduan mengenai bau daripada penduduk tempatan. Sisa pepejal dari SPAJ mempunyai kandungan air dan organik yang tinggi. Daripada keputusan analisis VFAs menggunakan kromatografi gas (GC) untuk air larut resap sisa pepejal perbandaran dalam kajian ini, asid asetik, butyric dan propionik merupakan kompaun-kompaun utama yang banyak melepaskan bau. Kajian ini melibatkan perbandingan antara keupayaan penyingkiran bau dari segi kecekapan penyingkiran bau antara ejen pelekat dan produk enzim iaitu Lysol dan Mikroorganisma Efektif (EM). Kepekatan bau, ciri bau dan skala hedonik sampel sampah selepas menyembur deodorizers ini ditentukan dan dibandingkan dengan menggunakan SM100 Scentroid Olfactometer di makmal. Langkah-langkah kajian ini menyerupai prosedur penyingkiran bau yang diamalkan oleh SPAJ pada masa kini. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan bahawa Lysol mempunyai keupayaan dan kecekapan penyingkiran bau yang lebih tinggi dalam mengurangkan bau jika dibandingkan dengan EM tanpa mengira kekerapan penyemburan. Pada masa yang sama, kepekatan bau di tapak penuangan sisa selepas penyemburan Lysol akan diukur setiap jam dan dibandingkan dengan keputusan simulasi di makmal. Ia didapati bahawa kepekatan bau di SPAJ adalah lebih tinggi berbanding dengan keputusan simulasi di makmal. Kepekatan bau tertinggi di SPAJ adalah 1361 OU/m3 manakala untuk keadaan simulasi, kepekatan bau yang paling tinggi adalah 1201 OU/m3 dengan peratusan variasi 11.76 %. Kesimpulannya, semburan Lysol dua kali setiap 6 jam adalah berkesan untuk penyingkiran bau di stesen pemindahan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Odor pollution by municipal solid waste facilities such as transfer station causes public environmental discomfort especially towards citizens that are living nearby. Lack of odor standards and related guidelines to reduce odor impact effectively becomes a major problem encountered by these municipal solid waste facilities operators after receiving complaints regarding odor from the local population. The municipal solid waste from SPAJ has high moisture content and organic content. From results of VFAs analysis using gas chromatography (GC) for municipal solid waste leachate in this research, it is found that acetic, butyric and propionic acid are the most contributing odor causing compounds for odor emission. This research involves the comparison between odor removal efficiency between masking agent and enzymatic product, namely Lysol and Effective Microorganisms (EM). The odor concentration, odor character and hedonic tone of garbage samples after spraying of these deodorizers are determined and compared by using SM100 Scentroid Olfactometer at laboratory. These simulates the odor removal procedure being practised by SPAJ. The results show that Lysol has higher odor removal efficiency and capability in reducing odor compared to EM regardless of application frequencies. The hedonic tone and odor character have improved after treatment by these deodorizers. On the other hand, real-time hourly odor concentrations after Lysol spraying at waste tipping area are measured and compared with simulated results at laboratory. It is found that odor concentrations at SPAJ are slightly higher than simulated results at laboratory. The highest odor concentration recorded at site was 1361 OU/m3 whereas for simulated condition, the highest odor concentration recorded was 1201 OU/m3 with variation difference of 11.76%. It can be concluded that spraying Lysol twice once per 6 hours is efficient for odor abatement at transfer station.
