Preparation of banana peel based activated carbon using microwave irradiation for methylene blue dye removal from aqueous solution

Preparation of banana peel based activated carbon using microwave irradiation for methylene blue dye removal from aqueous solution / Lee Lye Qing
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The extensive use of coal based activated carbon (AC) as an adsorbent for the purification of textile industry dye effluent is not economically feasible due its high production cost. Thus, this research focus on producing alternative AC adsorbent banana peel waste for dye removal that meet specific industrial requirements. The performance of the prepared banana peel based activated carbon (BPAC) was evaluated by conducting a batch adsorption system for methylene blue (MB) removal. Central composite design (CCD) model was utilized to study the effect of radiation power and radiation time on the MB removal and BPAC’s yield. The optimum preparation conditions: radiation power of 487.26 W and radiation time of 7.31 minutes had resulted in 91.54 % and 38.35 % of MB removal and BPAC’s yield respectively. The effect of initial dye concentration (25-300 mg/L), contact time, solution temperature (30, 45 and 60 °C) were evaluated in this study. The equilibrium data followed Freundlich isotherm model with R2 = 0.9956 whereas kinetic data followed pseudo second order with R2 = 0.9999. The calculated ΔH° and ΔS° value were found to be 41.51 kJ/mol and 0.0693 kJ/mol respectively indicating adsorption of MB on BPAC was endothermic and chemisorption process with non-spontaneous in nature. In conclusion, BPAC was successfully used for methylene blue dye removal.
