Dalam kajian ini pemangkin garam heteropoliasid (Sr- HPW / SBA -15) yang dipaut pada SBA- 15 telah disintesis melalui kaedah pengisitepuan dua langkah untuk menggalakkan pengesterifikasi terpilih gliserol dengan asid laurik untuk menghasilkan monolaurin. Pencirian telah dijalankan dan hasil yang didapati menunjukkan bahawa struktur mesoporous SBA-15 dapat dikekalkan. Ia juga menunjukkan bahawa terdapat penyebaran Sr- HPW yang baik pada matriks sokongan silika. Aktiviti pemangkin Sr-HPW/SBA-15 telah dikaji dan dibandingkan dengan pengesterifikasian tanpa pemangkin tersebut menggunakan suhu yang tetap iaitu 160 °C , 4:1 nisbah bahan tindak balas dan 10% pautan. Hal ini telah membuktikan bahawa pemangkin 10 % Sr-HPW/SBA-15 dapat mencapai kadar penghasilan yang sangat tinggi. Di samping itu, ia juga membuktikan bahawa pemangkin 10 % Sr- HPW / SBA- 15 boleh digunakan berulang kali tanpa kehilangan yang ketara dalam tahap aktivitinya. Pemangkin segar dapat mencapai kira-kira 83.80% penukaran, pemangkin yang dikitar semula buat kali pertama dapat mencapai kira-kira 77.29% dan pemangkin yang dikitar semula buat kali kedua dapat mencapai kira-kira 74.86% penukaran asid laurik. Kadar penghasilan juga menunjukkan penurunan yang tidak ketara iaitu pada 44.31%, 36.86% dan 34.47% untuk pemangkin segar, pemangkin pertama dan kedua yang dikitar semula masing-masing . Hal ini menunjukkan bahawa pemangkin 10% Sr- HPW/SBA-15 mampu bertahan lama. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this study the heteropolyacid salt catalyst (Sr-HPW/SBA-15) supported on SBA-15 was synthesised via two-step impregnation method to promote a selective esterification of glycerol with lauric acid into monolaurin. Characterizations were carried out and the result suggested that the typical mesoporous structure of the support was retained and that there is a good dispersion of Sr-HPW on the matrix of the silica support. The activity of the Sr-HPW/SBA-15 catalyst was also investigated and compared with a blank reaction of esterification under a fixed temperature of 160 °C, 4:1 reactant ratio and 10% loading. It was proved that the 10% Sr-HPW/SBA-15 catalyst was able to achieve a very high conversion and yield of 83.80% and 44.31% respectively. In addition, it was also proved that the 10% Sr-HPW/SBA-15 catalyst may be used repeatedly without significant loss of activity. The fresh catalyst achieved about 83.80% conversion, first recycled catalyst about 77.29% and second recycled catalyst about 74.86% conversion. The yield also showed insignificant degradation which is at 44.31%, 36.86% and 34.47% for fresh first and second recycled catalyst respectively. This shows that the 10% Sr-HPW/SBA-15 catalyst is durable.
