Fill comparative method – a study of strengths as defined by various methods_Muhammad Ammar Nazli_A9_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ The purpose of this research is to study the various strength methods of various mix ratios. There are 5 strength test used in this study and 11 mix ratios were tested during the test. The 5 test is Proctor test, California Bearing Ratio test, Mackintosh test, Cone Penetration Test and Direct Shear test. Laterite soil is has a cohesive where it is not easy to crumble compared to sand that is non cohesive. The use of different mix ratio is also one of the ways t improve the soils. The best mix ratio in this study is different in each test except for Mackintosh and CPT test where the best soil mix is at 20%-80% (sand-laterite). The best soil mix for proctor test is 10%-90% (laterite-sand) while for CBR test, the best mix ratio is 100% laterite. Direct shear test measures the shear strength of the soil indicate that the best mix ratio in terms of soil strength is at 50%-50% (laterite-sand). The different mix ratio for each test shows that each soil mix has its own advantage compare to others. It up to the contactors or engineers to use the soil mix based on the suitable purpose. When the soil mix is used in a suitable purpose, it can be cost saving. It also can help the engineer to maximize the design capacity of the project based on the strength of the soil improvement.
