A comparative study of travel characteristics between train and bus passengers in Ipoh City / Teng Jun Geng
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This study highlights the accessibility and infrastructure issues of public transportation. The increasing number of private vehicles in Malaysia has caused congestion, pollution and accidents. The nation’s growth and the need to meet mobility, environmental, and energy objectives place demands on public transit systems. The population and density of Ipoh city reflects and represents the majority of urban centers in Malaysia. Therefore, Ipoh needs to achieve the vision and target of National Land Public Transport Master Plan (2012) by improving the existing public transport systems. ETS train station and Amanjaya bus terminal is the main public transportation terminal in Ipoh city. This study aims to analyze the travel characteristics of the bus passengers in Amanjaya bus terminal and train passengers in ETS train station. Radar chart, independent sample t-test, multinomial logistic regression test and spatial analysis were performed by using various software to analyze the travel characteristics and factors affecting mode choices of ETS and bus passengers. The results show that public transport utilization is higher for bus passengers as compared to ETS passengers. As for ETS passengers, their average travel distance, travel time and travel cost to the public transport terminal are relatively low in value as compared to bus passengers. For the ETS passengers who has shorter travel distance, they prefer to cycle or walk to the ETS train station as compared to car and other travel mode choice. In addition, the bus utilization rate is relatively low for ETS train station as compared to Amanjaya bus terminal which has more passengers who use short distance bus as the travel mode choice. In short, it is important to address the issues on the accessibility of the passengers who use public transportation therefore we can suggest suitable solutions to relevant authorities.
