Kehadiran bayangan dalam imej digital biasanya menimbulkan kesukaran dalam bidang pemprosesan imej, terutamanya untuk peruasan imej dan pengecaman wajah. Pembentukan bayangan sering membawa kepada pelbagai cabaran seperti herotan bentuk objek. Masalah-masalah sebegini boleh menyebabkan kemerosotan nyata dari segi keupayaan bagi kebanyakan aplikasi visual. Oleh itu, adalah penting untuk menangani masalah ini melalui pembangunan algoritma pengurangan bayang-bayang. Dalam projek ini, tugas pengurangan bayangan telah dilakukan dengan melaksanakan pengesanan bayang-bayang, penyingkiran bayangan dan akhir sekali pembetulan pinggir bayangan mengikut urutan. Dua algoritma telah dicadangkan dan dilaksanakan menggunakan ruang warna CIE Lab. Algoritma yang pertama dicadangkan talah dilaksanakan berdasarkan maklumat pencahayaan dan warna untuk pixel. Algoritma kedua telah dilakukan melalui pengambangan terhadap satu atau lebih saluran bagi ruang warna Lab. Beberapa eksperimen awal telah dilakukan terhadap kedua-dua algoritma untuk mendapatkan nilai yang telah dioptimumkan bagi pembolehubah penalaan. Keputusan-keputusan daripada kedua-dua algoritma yang telah dicadangkan telah dibandingkan dengan keputusan-keputusan yang diperolehi daripada kaedah yang dilakukan oleh Murali & Govindan (2013) menggunakan set sembilan imej ujian yang serupa, dari segi ketepatan pengesanan bayangan dan tempoh pemprosesan diperlukan. Algoritma kedua yang dicadangkan telah mengatasi algoritma lain. Algoritma kedua mempunyai prestasi yang lebih baik dalam menghasilkan imej keluaran yang kelihatan munasabah, dalam tempoh lebih singkat. Keupayaan dan prestasi algoritma tersebut disahkan sekali lagi dalam analisis kuantitatif. Melalui analisis terhadap keratan rentas untuk nilai keamatan pixel, ia membuktikan bahawa algoritma kedua mempunyai anggaran warna yang terbaik bagi tujuan penyingkiran bayangan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Presence of shadow in digital image often poses nuisances in the field of image processing, especially for image segmentation and facial recognition. Formation of shadow often leads to numerous challenges such as object shape distortion. These problems could cause substantial deterioration in capabilities of many visual applications. Therefore, it is essential to address this problem through development of shadow reduction algorithm. In this project, the task of performing shadow reduction is done by executing shadow detection, shadow removal and lastly shadow edge correction in sequential order. Two algorithms have been proposed and implemented using CIE Lab colour space. The first proposed algorithm is implemented based on pixel illumination and colour information. The second algorithm is carried out via thresholding of one or more Lab colour space channel. A number of preliminary experiments has been performed on both algorithms respectively in order to obtain optimized value of tuning variables. The results from both proposed algorithms are compared with results obtained from the method done by Murali & Govindan (2013) using identical set of nine test images, in terms of shadow detection accuracy and required processing period. It is found that the second proposed algorithm outperformed the other algorithms. The second algorithm performed better in producing result images that seem visually plausible, within shorter period of time. The capability and performance of the algorithm further verified in quantitative analysis. Through analysis on pixel intensity value cross-section, it is proven that the second algorithm has the best colour estimation for shadow removal..
