Simulation of a grid-connected photovoltaic system based on matlab-simulink programming / Ong Kah Wooi
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Photovoltaic (PV) modules convert the light energy from the Sun into electrical energy. They can be connected in series or parallel to form PV arrays that can supply more power. A grid-connected PV system is a PV system whereby the power generated by the PV arrays are supplied to the utility grid. At any particular irradiance and temperature, there is only one point on the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the PV array where the array operates at maximum power. As it is desirable to operate the PV array at the maximum power point (MPP) at all times, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) has been developed. In this project, a single-phase grid-connected PV system is simulated using MATLAB and Simulink. The grid-connected PV system consists of a PV array, a Boost converter, an inverter and a filter. The Boost converter steps up the output DC voltage of the PV array. The inverter converts the output DC voltage of the Boost converter to an AC voltage of grid frequency. The filter is used to produce a purely sinusoidal AC voltage waveform by eliminating the higher-order harmonics. The Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm is used to achieve MPPT. The system is simulated under different irradiance conditions and the effects are observed.
