___________________________________________________________________________________ This paper studies on the suitability of empty fruit bunch and corn cob in the fermentative production of xylitol by using Candida guilliermondii. The hydrolysis results show that corn cob hydrolyzates contain higher concentrations of glucose and xylose upon hydrolysis at 100oC by 2% HCl. The highest glucose and xylose concentration obtained in the corn cob hydrolyzates were 5.89 g/l and 20.51 g/l respectively. The highest glucose and xylose concentration obtained in the empty fruit bunch hydrolyzates were 1.98 g/l and 13.75 g/l. In the latter study on the fermentation performance of empty fruit bunch and corn cob, empty fruit bunch had the highest final cell concentration of 19.3 g/l whereas corn cob had the highest final cell concentration of 18.5 g/l after 96 hours of fermentation at 25oC.
