Comparison and improvement of newton-raphson and gauss-seidel methods in power system load flow study

Comparison and improvement of newton-raphson and gauss-seidel methods in power system load flow study / Foong Tze Hoe
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A good economic dispatch is highly essential in order to minimize production cost, conserve energy and preserve the environment especially in today’s fast growing modern world. This is where load flow analysis comes into play. The task of ensuring a stable, reliable and economic power flow within a system can be easily achieved through load flow analysis. By conducting load flow studies, all important parameters in a system such as voltage magnitudes, phase angles, real power, reactive power, line flows and line losses can be easily analyzed and determined. There are many methods that can be used to conduct load flow studies and analysis. In this project, the main focus is on Gauss-Seidel, Newton-Raphson and hybrid methods that are derived from the first two. MATLAB source codes are developed for each method to be tested on three standard test systems i.e. IEEE-30 bus, IEEE-57 bus and IEEE-118 bus test systems. The effectiveness of the methods used is measured in terms of number of iterations and computation time taken for convergence. Further analysis is done by comparing the simulation results obtained from the various methods to determine the best possible method.
