Cerun yang terbentuk daripada pasir adalah merupakan salah satu cerun semulajadi yang biasa ditemui di Malaysia. Kebarangkalian untuk cerun pasir gagal secara semulajadi adalah sangat tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan cerun semulajadi yang lain. Malaysia merupakan negara yang mempunyai cuaca yang lembap dimana tanahnya menerima hujan sepanjang tahun dan dipercayai ianya menjadi faktor utama yang mempercepat kegagalan cerun semulajadi berpasir. Oleh sebab itu, munculnya kajian berkaitan dengan mekanisma berkaitan kegagalan cerun berpasir di dalam lapisan tanah tidak tepu sebagai langkah penyelesaian. Model fizikal adalah salah satu daripada kaedah yang sering digunapakai. Melalui kaedah ini, penggunaan pasir standard seperti pasir Toyoura dan Ottawa sebagai bahan utama untuk model fizikal adalah diperlukan memandangkan ciri-ciri asas pasir telahpun biasa di kaji di seluruh dunia. Malangnya, kedua-dua pasir tersebut adalah mahal dan mengambil masa untuk di import dari tempat lain. Oleh yang demikian, kajian ini mencadangkan penggunaan pasir yang diambil daripada sebuah lombong di Kampung Trong sebagai alternatif untuk bahan model fizikal. Perbandingan mengenai ciri-ciri asas dan kekuatan pasir ini dibincangkan di dalam kajian ini. Walaubagaimanapun, melalui ujian yang dilakukan, didapati bahawa saiz zarah untuk pasir yang di uji mempunyai peratusan perbezaan yang besar jika dibandingkan dengan pasir Toyoura dan pasir Ottawa. Hal ini kerana, pasir yang di uji di ambil secara terus dari lombong tanpa sebarang penambahbaikan seperti pembasuhan, pengehadan saiz pasir, penghapusan bahan kimia dan sebagainya. Oleh sebab itu, beberapa cadangan telah disenaraikan dalam usaha mendapatkan keputusan yang diharapkan dalam kajian akan datang. Bagi kekuatan pasir pula, pasir bersaiz 2mm adalah digalakkan untuk digunakan bagi model fizikal disebabkan kurangnya perbezaan jika dibandingkan dengan pasir Toyoura dan pasir Ottawa. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sand is one of the common natural slope material presences in Malaysia. It is believed that the tendencies of sand slope failure are higher if compared to other natural slope structure. This is because, Malaysia is a humid country where it receives rainfall continuously each year and it is believed to be one of the triggering factors of sand slope failure. For that reason, the study of mechanism of slope failure in unsaturated soil layer emerges as a way to counter the landslide problems. Physical model was one of the methods that were commonly used to study the mechanism of slope failure. For this method, there was a need for the usage of standard sand such as Toyoura and Ottawa sand as the main materials since its basic characteristics had been observed and used worldwide for physical model. Unfortunately, it is expensive and time consuming to be imported from other places. For that reason, this study proposed the usage of sand taken from a mine in Kampung Trong, Perak as an alternative for physical models materials. Comparison about the basic characteristic and strength of sand was discussed in this study. However, for basic characteristics of sand sample it was found that the particle size somehow had a big percentage difference if compare with Toyoura and Ottawa sand. This is because, tested sand was naturally taken from the mining site without any proper modification as follows to what Toyoura and Ottawa already experience such as washing, size limitation, chemical disinfection and such. Due to that reasons, several recommendations had been enlisted so that the sand sample able to reached the desirable results. In terms of strength, the 2mm size sand was recommended to be used as physical model materials due to the less differ when compared with Ottawa shear parameters (cohesion and friction angle).
