Treatment of refrigerator malodour using mangrove wood based activated carbon

Treatment of refrigerator malodour using mangrove wood based activated carbon / Syazana Hazra Zulkifli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A refrigerator with strong, unpleasant or offensive smells is something that is commonly experienced and may affect the storage of food. This situation can be a nuisance to a person’s life especially if the odour is frequent and/or persistent. Activated carbons (AC) made from mangrove wood that had been charred were used in this project to eliminate the refrigerator malodour since it consists of a network of microscopic pores and has potential as odour removal material. Shrimp paste samples were stored in refrigerator for a certain period of time to imitate the malodorous smell of the refrigerator. Activated carbons were prepared through chemical activation using phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in the form of nuggets with different weight range to represent the difference in size and surface are. The prepared activated carbons were compared to the commercial activated carbons to identify their effectiveness in removing the refrigerator malodour. Two odour assessments were conducted which using personal olfactometer (SM 100) and hedonic tone. Solids test, moisture content test and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) test were also done to determine the effects of AC application on the sample and on the AC blocks themselves. Based on the results obtained, medium-sized activated carbon (16 cm²) was the most suitable size of AC to remove the odour produced by the low amount of shrimp paste sample which had the weight of 6 g. On the other hand, for the odour produced by high amount of shrimp paste sample which had the weight of 20 g, extra large-sized activated carbon (32 cm²) was the most suitable and cost saving size of AC. In conclusion, this study has shown that mangrove wood char activated carbons can be used in reducing malodour inside the household refrigerators.
