Energy harvesting using acoustic guitar for low voltage application / Low Sai Men
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Energy crisis is one of the present day issue. United Nation, by promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), is one of the initiative to raise the awareness of people. Aligning the direction to provide solution for Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy in SDG, the project research on renewable energy and method to harvest energy. Modern musical instrument relies on electricity for amplification during performance, hence energy harvesting can be considered as one of the possible development in modern day musical instrument technology. Guitar, as one of the most popular musical instrument depends on 9V DC battery for pre-amplifier (pre-amp) for sound amplification. Often in times a guitarist has difficulties when the battery used for pre-amp is empty, and hence create trouble for performance. The project attempt to develop an energy harvesting device using acoustic guitar for low voltage application such as pre-amp, guitar tuner and metronome. To successfully harvest energy from acoustic guitar, the research approach methods to collect signal by using a magnetic guitar pickup (transducer), AC/DC rectification and DC/DC Conversion. The acoustic guitar metallic string vibrates in the magnetic field produced by the magnetic guitar pickup, induces the voltage signal that will be accessed using oscilloscope. Input voltage is rectified and boosted to desired output voltage. Circuits are fabricated for prototyping and testing. 7.2V DC is obtained by plucking an E-string (thinnest string) on the guitar that produce 90dB amplitude of acoustic sound, under simulation result. Future effort in hardware design should be focused in order to breakthrough current project development.
