Subsurface characterization in lubuk buntar site for the riverbank filtration (rbf) project

Subsurface characterization in lubuk buntar site for the riverbank filtration (rbf) project / Nur Fatin Mohamed Sidek
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The research is to characterize subsurface soil materials at the site of riverbank filtration (RBF) project in Lubuk Buntar. Riverbank filtration is the answer to the deteriorated quality of water entering treatment plants. In the process, river water passes through various permeable filtration media on its way to the extraction wells normally constructed along the riverbank. The soil types along the depth of a well will determine the suitability of the site for RBF installation. In this research, the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) has been used to characterize the various types of soils retrieved during drillings of monitoring wells at 10m and 20m from the river, while the pumping well was located 30m from the river; the three wells were aligned along a straight line perpendicular to the river bank. The samples were all disturbed and retrieved from the drill holes by percussion method. The types of soils and their stratifications were found suitable for the RBF project due to major presence of sand with good drainage qualities at suitable depths. Based on sieve analysis and hydrometer tests carried out on the sandy soils, the size of grains ranged between 0.063mm and 2.00m, with Coefficient of Uniformity (Cᵤ) ranged between 2.22 and 6.50 and Coefficient of Conformity (Cc) ranged between 0.90 and 2.06, leading to the determination of Poorly Graded Sand (SP) as the most dominant sandy material of the site. For borehole 1, at 10 m from the river, the presence of sandy layer began at 13 m below surface while at Borehole 2, at 20 m from the river, the presence of sandy layer began at 6 m below ground surface. This sandy soil layer was overlain by clayey soil layers at the top which were mixed and not represented by any particular type of soil.
