Penggunaan bahan semulajadi sebagai bahan binaan dilihat tidak lagi releven kerana sumber itu akan lupus dengan penggunaan yang berterusan. Justeru, penggantian bahan semulajadi sebagai sebahagian daripada bahan binaan perlu dikaji dan menggantikannya dengan bahan yang boleh diperbaharui seperti polistren. Polistren adalah bahan yang dihasilkan daripada tindak balas kimia yang tidak memberi kesan kepada alam sekitar dan ianya boleh dikitar semula. Selain itu, polistren juga mempunyai kelebihan sebagai penebat haba bunyi yang boleh memberi kebaikan kepada manusia jika digunakan sebagai sebahagian daripada bahan binaan. Dalam kajian ini, manik polistren kembang yang bersalut telah digunakan sebagai penggantian kepada pasir semulajadi dalam bancuhan mortar. Sampel mortar kembang bersalut dan sampel mortar biasa telah diuji dengan ujian kekuatan mampatan, ujian kekuatan lenturan, ujian nadi halaju ultrasonik, ujian permukaan, ujian serapan air dan ujian konduktiviti haba. Hasil daripada ujian menunjukkan kebaikan mortar polistren kembang bersalut yang boleh menjadi penebat haba yang baik dan boleh diaplikasi dalam sektor pembinaan dimana 86% kurang kekonduksian haba berbanding mortar biasa. Mortar polistren kembang bersalut mencatatkan bacaan kekonduksiaan haba 0.33 W/Mk manakala mortar biasa 2.36 W/Mk. Disebabkan mortar polistren kembang bersalut mempunyai kadar kemeresapan dan kekonduksian haba yang rendah, ia boleh digunakan untuk kekonduksian haba di sesuatu ruang jika digunakan sebagai lapisan lantai atau kemasan dinding. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The usage of natural materials as a building material seen no longer relevant because the source will be depleted as continues used. Thus, the replacement of natural resources as part of the construction materials should be reviewed and being replace with renewable materials such as polystyrene. Polystyrene is a substance produced from a chemical reaction that does not give effect to the environment and can be recycled. In addition, polystyrene also has the advantage that it is best to thermal insulation and sound that can be beneficial to humans when used as part of the construction materials. In this study, coated expanded polystyrene beads aggregates has been used as a replacement for natural sand in mortar mix. Samples of coated expanded polystyrene mortar and conventional mortar were tested with compressive strength test, flexural strength test, ultrasonic pulse test, rebound hammer test, tests of water absorption and thermal conductivity test. Results of the test shown coated EPS mortar can be a good thermal insulator and can be applied in the construction sector where CEPS mortar achieved 86 % lower than conventional mortar. The CEPS mortar achieved value of 0.33 W/Mk where the conventional mortar recorded the value of 2.36 W/Mk. Due to the lowest diffusivity and conductivity of thermal of CEPS mortar, it can be benefit to reduce the conductivity of heat in the compound as the CEPS mortar used as wall finishing and floor rendering.
