Bencana tsunami yang berlaku pada 26 Disember 2004 disebabkan oleh gempa bumi Sumatra Andaman telah mengubah perspektif rakyat Malaysia pada masalah gempa bumi. Sebelum bencana itu berlaku, rakyat Malaysia kurang kebimbangan tentang kesan bahaya yang disebabkan oleh gempa bumi. Selepas beberapa peristiwa yang menyebabkan gegaran kepada bangunan di Semenanjung Malaysia yang disebabkan oleh gempa bumi jarak jauh di Sumatra, pengetahuan seismik telah diberi lebih perhatian. Objektif utama disertasi ini ialah untuk menyiasat perbezaan peratusan muatan tetulang keluli (tan metrik) dan jumlah isipadu konkrit (m3) yang digunakan untuk sebuah bangunan. Perbezaan peratusan ialah antara bangunan yang direka bentuk dengan dan tanpa peruntukan kod seismik. Kod seismik yang digunakan ialah “Uniform Building Code” (UBC 97). Projek ini melibatkan sebuah bangunan sekolah empat tingkat yang direka bentuk oleh Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Malaysia. Rantau seismik Zon 2B dipilih kerana Malaysia berada dalam rantau seismik rendah ke sederhana. Beban seismik ke atas bangunan direka bentuk berdasarkan Prosedur Persamaan Statik. Perisian STAAD.Pro 2007 digunakan untuk analisis seismik. Struktur direka bentuk berdasarkan kod UBC 97. Hanya elemen-elemen struktur utama sahaja diambil kira. Ini terdiri daripada elemen rasuk dan tiang. Kajian ini mendapati bahawa jika reka bentuk seismik dilakukan kepada sekolah terpilih, perbezaan peratusan muatan keluli ialah kira-kira 21.71 % manakala perbezaan peratusan jumlah isipadu konkrit ialah kira-kira 26.03 %. Maka, peruntukan kod seismik untuk reka bentuk bangunan sekolah di Malaysia boleh dicadangkan sebagai langkah berjaga-jaga dan untuk keselamatan sebelum sebarang bencana berlaku. ___________________________________________________________________________________ A tsunami disaster which happened on 26 December 2004 caused by Sumatra Andaman earthquake have make Malaysian people to change their perspective on the earthquake problem. Before the disaster, Malaysians have less concern about the harmful effect caused by the earthquake. After few incidents that cause a tremor to buildings in Peninsular Malaysia due to long distance earthquake in Sumatra, more attention was given into the seismic knowledge. The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate the percentage difference of steel reinforcement tonnage (tonne) and the concrete volume (m3) used for a building. The percentage difference is between the building that was designed with and without the seismic code provision. The seismic code provision used is Uniform Building Code (UBC 97). This project involves a modeling of four-storey school building designed by Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Malaysia. Seismic region Zone 2B is selected since Malaysia is identified in category low to moderate seismic region. Seismic load is designed based on Equivalent Static procedure. The seismic analysis is performed using the STAAD.Pro 2007 software. The structure is designed based on the UBC 97 code provision. Only the main structural elements are participated. These consist of the beam and the column elements. This study found that if the seismic design is considered for the selected school, the percentage difference of steel tonnage is about 21.71 % while the concrete volume percentage difference is about 26.03 %. Hence, seismic code provision for school building design in Malaysia can be recommended since it is worth to have the early precaution and safety action before any disaster happen.
