Performance studies of continuous anode microbial fuel cells using cyclic voltammetry method

Performance studies of continuous anode microbial fuel cells using cyclic voltammetry method / Mohammad Zamri Sheik Abdul Kader
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this study the effect of dilution rate on the performance of microbial fuel cells was investigated. Using Geobacter sulfurreducens as the biocatalyst and acetate as the substrate, was utilized to produce electrical energy. Dilution rate of acetate in the range of (0.02, 0.04 and 0.06 h-) at pH 6.8 and temperature of 30°C was experimented using a single chamber MFCs design. The study shows that current generation in MFC is highest at 0.04 h-1 dilution rate with 0.65 mA current produced which indicates that the current generation did increase when the concentration was high and slowed down in proportion to how diluted it got over time. The reversibility studies and kinetic of the redox reactions occurring on the anode surface MFCs cells were investigated in details by determination of the heterogeneous electron transfer rate where the lowest ko was 0.0094 at oxidation peak and 0.0031 at reduction peak both at 0.04h- dilution rate. These results indicates that the reversibility of the redox reactions dependent on the dilution rate where it’s quasi reversible at 0.04 h- dilution rate.
