Waste generation from wet markets with and without on the site treatment

Waste generation from wet markets with and without on the site treatment / Muhammad ‘Afif Zulkifli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This research was about the waste generation rate from two different wet markets which undergo different waste management practice. The wet markets involve are Parit Buntar wet market and Bagan Ajam wet market. The characteristics of the waste and the composition of waste generated are also the main focus in this research. The waste generation rate from both wet market is determined by the site data collection for 14 days period. The composition of the waste is determined through the separation of the collected waste on site and the proportion of the waste is recoded in percentage respect to the waste wet weight. Representative sample from sub sampling method which is the coning and quartering technique is brought to the lab to undergo few test to determine their basic characteristics. The resulted waste generation rate from Parit Buntar wet market is 1.51kg/stall/day which lead to 40.9 tonnes waste generated per year while Bagan Ajam waste generation rate is 1.55kg/stall/day which generates 40.15 tonnes waste per year. With the composting facility at Bagan Ajam wet market, the generated waste is reduced to 0.25 kg/stall/day with projected generated waste per year is only 6.6 tonnes per year. The waste from both wet market possesses similar characteristics which suggest that Parit Buntar wet market waste do have the potential to be feedstock and treated to undergo composting process. With addition of recycling campaign, the generated waste from both wet market can achieve zero waste production.
