Preparation and characterization of activated carbon from mangrove timber via physical activation

Preparation and characterization of activated carbon from mangrove timber via physical activation / Nur Dina Zaukiflee
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The production of activated carbon from mangrove pile leftover which is normally considered as waste from construction site is one of the environmental-friendly solutions by transforming wastes to a valuable product with high surface area. Thus, the main objective of this research was to prepare optimum activated carbon from mangrove timber via physical activation method. The carbonization process was carried out at 800oC for 1 hour under nitrogen flow rate of 150 ml/min. The char is then proceed to the activation process at various activation temperature of 750oC, 800oC and 850oC under different activation time of 1 hour, 1,5 hour and 2 hour. The effects of preparation variables which were activation temperature and activation time to precursor on the activated carbon yield and adsorption capacity on methylene blue dye were investigated. The optimal activated carbon was found at an activation temperature of 850oC and activation time of 2 hour with methylene blue adsorption capacity and BET surface area of 689.8239 mg/g and 0.479004m2/g respectively. The experimental data of the adsorption is well fitted to Langmuir isotherm with a R2 value of 0.9965. The results of adsorption study showed that the activated carbon prepared from mangrove timber is a suitable adsorbent for methylene blue removal from aqueous solution.
