Production of activated carbon from sugarcane bagasse for the removal of methyl violet 6b dye from aqueous solution

Production of activated carbon from sugarcane bagasse for the removal of methyl violet 6b dye from aqueous solution / Ng Shun Yong
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this study, sugarcane bagasse based activated carbon (SBAC) was prepared for the removal of methyl violet 6B dye from aqueous solution. Sugarcane bagasse (SB) was used to prepare the SBAC through physiochemical activation which involves potassium hydroxide (KOH) impregnation and carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification. During the preparation of SBAC, the chemical impregnation, char:KOH ratio was set at 1:2; while the activation temperature was set at 750oC for 2 hours. SBAC was high in fixed carbon content of 69.73% BET surface area of 681.52m2/g and total pore volume of 0.385cm3/g. With average pore diameter of 3.36nm, SBAC’s pore was classified as mesoporous type. The effect of initial dye concentration (25-300mg/L), contact time (0–24 hours), solution temperature (30-60oC) and pH (4-10) were evaluated through batch adsorption test. The obtained equilibrium data for MV6B was best fitted by Langmuir model. Meanwhile, the kinetic data were best represented by the pseudo first-order model for MV6B.
