Electricity generation by desulfovibrio vulgaris in microbial fuel cell (mfc) using activated sludge as a substrate

Electricity generation by desulfovibrio vulgaris in microbial fuel cell (mfc) using activated sludge as a substrate / Abdul Rasyid Ruslan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Microbial fuel cell (MFC) uses bacteria to generate electricity from the oxidation of organic matter. Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB), Desulfovibrio vulgaris was used in this study. The substrate was activated sludge taken from domestic wastewater treatment plant. Optimization of Desulfovibrio vulgaris growth and electricity generation was carried out using three variables which is anode/cathode distance, pH and temperature in a MFC. Result showed that the optimum condition for growth of Desulfovibrio vulgaris and electricity generation were: electrode distance 2 cm, substrate of pH 6, and incubation temperature of 40 ˚C. The maximum voltage and power density were 384 mV and 1506.08 mW/m2. This showed that MFC can be used for electricity generation and recycled the sludge from the wastewater treatment plant. The application of MFC in this study would lead to a new sustainable energy source and solved the environmental pollution problem.
