The study of gold leaching using thiourea for gold recovery in e-waste

The study of gold leaching using thiourea for gold recovery in e-waste / Nur Amirah Hani Mohd Azmi
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Electronic waste (e-waste) has become one of the fastest-growing pollution due to the rapid growth of electric and electronic equipment globally and eventually increases the potential of these e-waste as the secondary supply of gold. Thus, it has become a necessity to recover gold from e-waste. Known for its environmental friendly system, using thiourea in this study indicates more promising alternative for gold leaching compared to the conventional gold leaching using cyanide. The effect of stirring intensity, initial concentration of thiourea and concentration of ferric sulfate as the oxidant were studied. In this thesis, it is found that the leaching solution that yields the highest percentage of gold leaching contains 24g/L of thiourea and 0.01M of ferric sulfate with the stirring speed of 350rpm which is 0.26%. Using the optimum parameter obtained, the comparison of gold concentration between pre-treated and fresh e-waste were studied and it depicts a very significant difference in concentration with the value of 20952.98 and 72857.30 respectively. The obtained data will be useful for future development of gold recycling from e-waste.
