Karbon teraktif dihasilkan daripada hampas tebu dengan menggunakan pengaktifan stim di dalam relau bersuhu tinggi. Proses pirolisis cepat telah dijalankan dengan reaktor lapisan terbendalir untuk menghasilkan arang sebelum proses pengaktifan. Ujikaji telah dilaksanakan untuk meninjau kesan pelbagai parameter proses seperti saiz zarah, suhu pengaktifan dan tempoh masa pengaktifan terhadap kualiti karbon teraktif yang terhasil. Tambahan pula, ujikaji jerapan telah dijalankan dengan menggunakan metilena biru. Data-data daripada ujikaji telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan garis-sesuhu Langmuir dan Freundlich, dan didapati bahawa garis-sesuhu jerapan Langmuir memuatkan ujikaji data dengan baik. Kadar penjerapan menunjukkan psedo-tertib-kedua memuatkan kinetik jerapan dengan baik berbanding dengan kadar persamaan psedo-tertib-pertama. Kualiti terbaik karbon teraktif telah dihasilkan dengan saiz zarah 0.5 mm, suhu pirolisis 550°C dan diaktifkan dengan stim pada suhu 750°C selama 1 jam. Kapasiti penjerapan maxima metilena biru untuk karbon tersebut ialah 112.36 mg/g. Tambahan pula, maximum luas permukaan BET didapati bernilai 864 /g. Morfologi permukaan untuk satu karbon teraktif yang mempunyai prestasi tertinggi telah dikaji menggunakan mikroskop elektron imbasan. Ciri-ciri karbon teraktif yang dihasilkan telah dibandingkan dengan penyelidik lain dan karbon teraktif komersil. Keputusannya menunjukkan karbon hampas tebu boleh digunakan sebagai bahan asas alternatif sebagai karbon teraktif komersial berkos rendah. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Activated carbon was produced from sugarcane bagasse by using steam activation in a high temperature furnace. Fast pyrolysis process was carried out prior in fluidized bed reactor to produce char before activation process. Experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters such as particle size, activation temperature and activation time on the quality of the activated carbon prepared. In addition, the adsorption studies were done by using methylene blue. The experimental data were analyzed by using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and Langmuir isotherm shows satisfactory fit to the experiment of data. The rate of adsorption shows that the pseudo-second-order rate fitted the adsorption kinetics better than the pseudo-first-order rate equation. The best quality activated carbon was obtained with particle size of 0.5mm at pyrolysis temperature of 550°C and steam activation at 750°C for 1 hour. The methylene blue maximum adsorption capacity of carbon produced from sugarcane bagasse was found to be 112.36 mg/g. In addition, the maximum BET surface area obtained was 864 /g. The surface morphology of the one best performing activated carbon was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characteristic of the prepared activated carbon was compared with the other researchers and commercial activated carbon. The results indicated that the sugarcane bagasse carbon could be employed as a low cost alternative precursor to produce commercial activated carbon.
