Pemultipleksan Pembahagi Frekuensi Ortogonal (OFDM) adalah kaedah modulasi yang paling terkenal dalam sistem komunikasi tanpa wayar di mana ia salah satu teknik pembawa berbilang dimensi (MCM), ia menawarkan penyesuaian kadar data yang tinggi dan komunikasi yang mampu mengatasi saluran pemudaran. Satu kelemahan utama dalam OFDM ialah Nisbah Kuasa Puncak ke Purata (PAPR) di mana ia memerlukan kuasa pembesaran dengan operasi kawasan lelurus yang lebar pada penghantar untuk mengendalikan isyarat tersebut dan penyusutan prestasi kadar ralat bit (BER). Oleh itu, algoritma pemampat-kembangan menggunakan fungsi punca kuasa dua telah dicadangkan. Pemampat-kembangan ialah teknik pengurangan isyarat. Teknik ini mengurangkan PAPR dengan memampatkan dan mengembangkan isyarat puncak. Kelebihan fungsi punca kuasa dua pemampat-kembangan adalah ia mempunyai kompleksiti pengiraan yang rendah berbanding dengan teknik pengurangan PAPR yang lain. Kaedah ini mengubah taburan statistik simbol OFDM dari taburan Rayleigh kepada taburan seakan Gauss. Kesan dari taburan statistik boleh dilihat dari perubahan nilai puncak dan nilai purata kuasa dan ini membawa kepada pengurangan PAPR. Hasil PAPR yang diperoleh mengikut bilangan sub pembawa dan jenis modulasi yang digunakan. Bilangan sub pembawa meningkat, nilai PAPR juga meningkat. Tambahan pula, bagi 64 QAM OFDM memberikan penurunan PAPR yang lebih daripada 16 QAM sebanyak 1.018 dB dengan 512 sub pembawa. ______________________________________________________________________________________ Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the most popular modulation method in wireless communications, which is one of the multicarrier modulation (MCM) techniques, offers a considerable high data rate and reliable communications over fading channels. A major drawback in OFDM is high Peak to Average Ratio (PAPR) which requires a power amplifier with wide linear region of operation at the transmitter to handle that signal and degradation of bit error rate (BER) performance. Thus, companding algorithm using a square root function had been proposed in order to further reduce the PAPR of the OFDM signal. Companding is a signal distortion technique. This technique reduces the PAPR by compressing and expanding the peak signal. The advantage of square root companding function is it has low computational complexity compared to other PAPR reduction technique. This method changes the statistical distribution of the OFDM symbol from Rayleigh distribution into Gaussian like distribution. The effect of this statistical distribution can be seen by changes of the peak and average power values and this is lead to PAPR reduction. The result of PAPR obtained is based on the number of subcarriers and modulation type used. As number of subcarriers increase, PAPR value also increases. In addition, for 64 QAM of OFDM give more reduction of PAPR than 16 QAM by 1.018 dB with 512 subcarriers.
