Peak to average power ratio (papr) reduction using discrete cosine transform (dct) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system (ofdm) / Hazirah Saidin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multicarrier transmission technique that has become the technology for next generation wireless digital communication systems because of its high speed data rates, high spectral efficiency, high quality service and robustness against narrow band interference and frequency selective fading. However, OFDM also has its shortcoming. The major drawback of OFDM signal is its large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which lead to spectral spreading and degradation of bit error rate (BER) performance. To reduce the PAPR, many techniques have been proposed. Since the orthogonality feature of conventional OFDM is also provided by Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), this system can be implemented to provide higher PAPR reduction and achieve better noise immunity and hence better bit error rate (BER) performance than standard OFDM, while maintaining a low implementation cost. In this thesis, a new methods had been proposed in order to further reduction of PAPR which is DCT based OFDM .We will denote this scheme as DCT-OFDM, and the conventional OFDM system as original OFDM. Simulation results show noticeable improvement in the performance. For the 64 QAM original OFDM systems with 512 subcarriers, the value of PAPR is 11.87 dB. While after applying DCT- OFDM, the PAPR value is 8.717 dB. The different value before and after applying DCT is 3.153 dB. This shows that DCT provide the best performance in term of PAPR reduction.
