The title of this project is “Design of 500W Switch Mode Power Supply Using Boost Converter Topology”. The prototype designed manages to achieve 500.3 Watt output power and over 80% of efficiency. There are three circuits have been built which are rectifier circuit, switching circuit and Boost circuit. The rectifier circuit managed to produce output voltage of 100Vdc, while the switching circuit yielded “Pulse Width Modulation”, PWM waveform with 60% duty cycle and switching frequency of 60kHz. All the circuits are combined together in which the switching circuits acts as controller circuits.
The Boost converter circuit is simulated by using P-Sim 4.1 software before it’s implemented on the breadboard. From simulation, the efficiency of the circuits is shown to be over 90%. The difference of efficiency between the simulation circuit and the prototype circuit is expected. In the simulation, all of components assumed are ideal but in practical the real components have their own tolerance and some error. Besides power losses in the switching circuit also affect the prototype circuit’s efficiency. Overall, the prototype circuit that has been designed manages to achieve efficiency over of 80%.
