Microwave-assisted activated carbon from parkia speciosa peel for methylene blue dye removal

Microwave-assisted activated carbon from parkia speciosa peel for methylene blue dye removal / Syahazmir Ahmad Shah
Proses ini didapati endotermik, physisorption dan spontan _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The performance of parkia speciosa peel activated carbon (PSPAC) as adsorbent in the removal of methylene blue dye (MB) by adsorption was studied in a batch process. PSPAC was prepared by physical activation process involving carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification under microwave irradiation. During the preparation of PSPAC, the optimum preparation conditions were obtained from response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum conditions are radiation power and activation time with 557 W and 8 minutes, respectively, which has resulted in 80.35% MB removal and 41.02% PSPAC yield. The optimized PSPAC has high BET and mesopore surface area of 625.41 m2/g and 438.40 m2/g, respectively. The pore volume of 0.375 cm3/g and fixed carbon content of 64.79% was obtained during preparation of PSPAC. The pore of PSPAC was mesoporous type with pore diameter of 2.21 nm. Parameters like initial dye concentration (25 – 300 ppm), contact time (0 – 24 hours) and solution temperature (30 - 60˚C) were investigated. Freundlich model was found as the best fitted model for the equilibrium data whereas pseudo-second-order model showed a good fitting to the kinetic data. The process was found to be endothermic, physisorption and spontaneous process.
