Adsorption study of ammonium from domestic wastewater and leachate using waste activated sludge_Nurul Azwin Burhanuddin_K4_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ Ammonium compound frequently presence in rivers, lakes and ponds has become a major concern throughout the world. It can contribute to eutrophication leading to oxygen depletion in water. This will cause harmful to aquatic life. In this project, ammonium was removed from domestic wastewater and leachate by adsorption process. Waste activated sludge collected from a local palm oil mill effluent treatment plant was used as a low cost adsorbent. The adsorption of ammonium was carried out by varying the parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and temperature. The most effective pH value for ammonium removal from both domestic wastewater and leachate onto waste activated sludge was 5. The presence of O-H group on the surface waste activated sludge was proved by Fourier Transmission Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. An increase in adsorbent dosage increased the percent removal of ammonium from both domestic wastewater and leachate due to the increase in adsorbent surface area. Removal of ammonium from both domestic wastewater and leachate decreased with the increase temperature indicate that the process was exothermic. Kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption of ammonium on waste activated sludge was best described by pseudo- second order. Regeneration of waste activated sludge was cost-effective process because waste activated sludge can be reused after this process.
