Adsorption of heavy metal ions by thin coated absorbent layer characteristics and performance study / Mohd Shafiq Rasli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Low adsorption capacity of natural clay minerals is a economic issue which limits application as low cost absorbents for removal of heavy metals from wastewater. In this context, natural bentonite was modified using acid activation method. This current research has been focused on adsorption process through coating method which is thin coated adsorbent layer. This research has contributed to the production of adsorbent coating named ‘Paintosorp’. Paintosorp as an environmental friendly paint was made up from adsorbent which is activated bentonite, water-based binder and distilled water as a solution for heavy metal removal purposes. In this study, the adsorption behaviour of Paintosorp with respect to Cu2+ and Zn2+ has been studied in order to consider its application to the purification of wastewater. The batch method has been employed, using metal concentrations in solution ranging from 10 mg/l to 50 mg/l. The percentage removal and uptake level of metal ions were determined for the adsorption. Experiments were carried out as a function of concentration of metals, solution pH, mixing speed and temperature. The percentage removal of metal ions decreases with an increase in the initial metal ion concentration. The optimum pH for copper and zinc removal was pH 5. The Paintosorp is characterized using FTIR and SEM techniques. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The Langmuir isotherm model was found more representative. The finding discovered the Paintosorp hold great potential to remove cationic heavy metal species from industrial wastewater.
